Chagpori Tibetan Medical College is at this moment located at Takdah
Cantonment, about twenty-seven kilometres from Darjeeling.
The College has been training students since 1992. The students
have to complete five years of studies after which they have one
year of internship. During the first five years they study the theory
and basics of Tibetan medicine and also Tibetan grammer and English.
During the internship period the students are given the opportunity
to learn the different aspects of clinical practice and medicine-making.
Throughout the entire period emphasis is also on the study and practice
of the Medicine Buddha rituals and dharma teachings related to healing.
These are the important aspects which characterise the Chagpori
system of medicine.
In the present fourth intake (or batch as it is usually known in
India) there are nine students, mainly nuns. As there are only a
few lady doctors in our community, we sincerely hope that they will
be of benefit to all. They will be completing their five years of
studies in December 2009. From March 2008 we admitted fifteen new
students for the fifth intake. We are still looking for sponsors
for the students who are not able to cover the expenses of their
studies.
In March 2011 we plan to start with the sixth intake of students.
Admission will begin in April 2010. Click
for form.
Qualifications were originally awarded by CTMI and the Tibetan Medical
and Astro Institute (Men-Tsee-Khang) which administered the examinations,
but now with the current fourth and fifth intakes the Central Council
of Tibetan Medicine will be the sole authority for issuing certificates.
